Amidst the rolling hills of the E-Yu border region, an agricultural enterprise named "Youyoucao" is quietly undergoing a digital transformation. Over the past three years, this locally rooted company has increased the proportion of its online sales from less than 10% to 65%. Its founder, Zhang Mingyuan, wrote on social media: "Mountains cannot block signals, nor can they block the market."
A recent visit by our reporter revealed the prominent slogan "Connecting every blade of grass to the world" on the factory wall of Youyoucao. Inside the workshop, workers were packaging freshly harvested herbal ingredients like houttuynia cordata and mint. The continuously printing express slips showed destinations covering 30 provinces across the country. Just five years ago, the company's products primarily circulated through local supermarkets and medicinal herb markets.
"The turning point came in 2021," recalled Zhang Mingyuan in his sample-filled office. At that time, the pandemic severely impacted offline channels, and inventory backlog pushed the company to the brink of crisis. The team tentatively posted their first field video harvesting houttuynia cordata on a short-video platform, unexpectedly garnering over two million views. "That day, our customer service WeChat added thousands of people. We suddenly realized that the internet wasn't a choice; it was a matter of survival."
This transformation wasn't simply about opening an online store. Youyoucao established a 7-person digital team, five of whom are returning "post-90s" youth. Within a year, they accomplished three key tasks: building a visual traceability system allowing consumers to scan a code and view the entire process from herb cultivation to processing; developing a mini-program storefront, introducing a "herbal subscription service" aligned with solar terms; and creating a series of short videos titled "Exploring E-Yu Herbs" on content platforms, featuring growers explaining the products themselves.
"The most difficult part was the mindset shift," admitted Li Wei, head of digital operations. Initially, the production department couldn't understand "why packaging needed to be designed for live-stream displays," while veteran sales staff believed "selling online isn't as tangible as running wholesale." To address this, the company organized over twenty internal seminars and even had senior workers and young employees swap roles for experience. "Now, even the aunties at the base proactively remind us: 'This angle looks good for video.'"
The digital transformation brought more than just channel expansion. E-commerce data feedback revealed high repurchase rates for mint products in East China, prompting the rapid development of deep-processed products like mint concentrate, with annual sales for that single category exceeding 8 million yuan. Simultaneously, the fragmented nature of online orders forced supply chain upgrades. The company invested 3 million yuan to build a flexible production line capable of small-batch, customized manufacturing.
Youyoucao's experience is creating a ripple effect. Thirteen agricultural enterprises from the E-Yu border region have come to learn from their model. Local government has listed it as a "typical case of enterprise internet development" and is using it as an opportunity to promote the construction of a regional agricultural product cloud warehouse. Chen Feng, a researcher at Chongqing University's Regional Economic Research Institute, commented: "The value of such enterprises lies in proving that even outside core internet hubs, traditional industries can achieve value chain reconstruction through deep digital integration."
However, challenges remain. Pointing to a traffic analysis chart on his computer, Zhang Mingyuan noted: "Rapid changes in platform algorithms, persistently high logistics costs, and the difficulty of retaining specialized digital talent are ongoing issues we must tackle." This year, the company plans to collaborate with vocational colleges to establish a "Rural E-commerce Training Base," aiming to cultivate a localized digital team.
As evening falls, cameras at the cultivation base automatically start a live stream. The screen shows herbal plants swaying, glinting golden in the sunset. The real-time viewer count in the top left corner reads: 3,274. This number likely exceeds the total number of merchants who visited in person over the past year. Youyoucao's internet journey, much like the herbs it cultivates, is putting down new roots in digital soil.
