Its founder, Zhang Qiming, frankly stated, "This wasn't a multiple-choice question; it was a matter of survival."

Entering Youyoucao's processing base in Lichuan, Hubei, hosts in the live-streaming room are showcasing newly developed ready-to-eat mushroom products, while a data screen in the background scrolls in real-time with orders from across the country. Just five years ago, this was merely a simple packaging workshop, with product sales heavily reliant on neighboring provinces and cities. "During those two years of the pandemic, offline channels almost came to a standstill, forcing us to move online," Zhang Qiming recalled. This forced transformation unexpectedly opened up a broader market.

The path of transformation was not smooth. Initially copying the e-commerce strategies of major brands yielded little effect. "We realized we couldn't just treat the internet as a new shelf," Li Wei, Youyoucao's e-commerce head, told the reporter. The team began delving deep into the regional characteristics of "E-Yu" (Hubei-Chongqing), integrating cultural elements like Tujia stilted buildings and the ecology of the Wuling Mountain area into product design and content marketing, creating the unique IP of "Mountain Delicacies from 30° North Latitude." By recording the entire process from picking to processing through short videos, they allowed consumers to intuitively feel the ecological value of the products.

Deeper transformation occurred in the supply chain. The enterprise invested in digital transformation, establishing a traceability system covering everything from mushroom spawn cultivation and growth environment monitoring to cold-chain logistics. By scanning a QR code, consumers can see the complete journey of their product from the mountains to their table. "Transparency has brought a trust premium; our repurchase rate is 40% higher than the industry average," Li Wei revealed. This system also compelled hundreds of upstream cooperative farmers to adopt standardized production, forming a digital agricultural collaboration network centered on the enterprise.

Youyoucao's exploration reflects the survival logic of regional small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) under the wave of the internet: not blindly pursuing traffic, but deeply integrating internet thinking into the core of products, management, and branding. Professor Chen from Chongqing University's Digital Economy Research Institute commented, "It provides a vivid case of 'connecting locally to the national market.' Its success lies not in how advanced the technology is, but in using digitalization to amplify regional characteristics and industrial foundations, achieving a 'soft transformation.'"

Today, Youyoucao is no longer content with just e-commerce sales. They are experimenting with using membership systems to accumulate user data to guide new product development in reverse; leveraging private domain communities to develop new formats like adoption agriculture and cloud farms to enhance user stickiness. Pointing to a planning chart, Zhang Qiming said, "The next step is to build a vertical platform for characteristic agricultural products from the Wuling Mountain area, bringing along more small and medium-sized farmers from the surrounding region."

From passive internet adoption to active network weaving, the practice of Youyoucao E-Yu demonstrates that for traditional enterprises deep in the industrial hinterland, internet development is by no means a simple channel shift, but a profound reshaping involving organization, products, and the value chain. Its story may provide an answer worth pondering for countless regional enterprises lingering at the crossroads of transformation.
