Deep in the mountainous border region between Chongqing and Hubei, a wild medicinal herb known as "Youyoucao" is undergoing an unprecedented digital transformation. In the past, local herb farmers relied on shoulder poles and backpacks to transport their herbs out of the remote mountains, with middlemen adding layers of markup, while pharmaceutical factories often faced the risk of supply disruptions. Today, a big data-based supply chain system is rewriting this scenario.

Recently, our reporter conducted an on-site visit to the core production area of Youyoucao, located on the border between Enshi in Hubei Province and Wushan in Chongqing. With support from local governments, the Youyoucao Industry Alliance, in collaboration with several technology companies, officially launched the "Hubei-Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Big Data Platform." This platform integrates data from the cultivation end, logistics end, and demand end, using intelligent algorithms to match supply and demand in real time, compressing the traditional herb circulation cycle from an average of 45 days to within 12 days.

"Before, we had no idea which pharmaceutical factory needed our herbs; we could only wait for buyers to come to us, and they would drive the prices very low," said Old Tan, a herb farmer in Hongchun Township, Wushan County, pointing to his Youyoucao plantation on the hillside. "Now, with a swipe on my phone, the big data platform directly tells me which factory offers the highest price, and I can even book a refrigerated truck to come and pick up the goods. This year, the purchase price for my Youyoucao has gone up by nearly 40%."

Youyoucao, a wild medicinal plant unique to the mountainous regions of Hubei and Chongqing, is known for its specific efficacy in clearing heat, detoxifying, and providing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Market demand has surged in recent years. However, due to scattered production areas, inconvenient transportation, and information asymmetry, high-quality Youyoucao often failed to fetch good prices, while downstream pharmaceutical companies were unable to expand production due to unstable raw material supplies.

"The core problem that big data solves is information transparency," stated Chen Mingyuan, Secretary-General of the Youyoucao Industry Alliance, at the platform launch conference. "We have connected the agricultural and meteorological bureaus of both Chongqing and Hubei, along with multiple logistics companies, to integrate scattered data on production areas, warehousing, transportation, and pharmaceutical procurement. Now, even if just 100 kilograms of Youyoucao are harvested in a single village, the platform can precisely match it with the most suitable buyer."

At a Youyoucao primary processing workshop in Baiguo Township, Enshi City, our reporter observed workers packing sorted Youyoucao and affixing electronic labels with QR codes. Scanning the code allows for tracing the batch's origin, harvest date, pesticide residue test results, and transportation route. This traceability system, also based on the big data platform, provides quality assurance for pharmaceutical companies and enhances the brand premium of Youyoucao.

"Previously, purchasing Youyoucao relied entirely on experience and trust, leading to inconsistent quality. Now, with data support, we feel confident placing large orders," the procurement director of a well-known domestic traditional Chinese medicine decoction piece company told our reporter in a phone interview. "In the month since the Youyoucao big data platform launched, we have completed over 5 million yuan in procurement through it, and the rate of goods meeting quality standards has increased from 70% to 96%."

With the deep integration of big data technology, the Youyoucao industry is shifting from "relying on the weather" to "relying on data." According to the operator of the Hubei-Chongqing Traditional Chinese Medicine Big Data Platform, the next step will be to introduce an AI price prediction model to help farmers and buyers proactively avoid market fluctuation risks. Meanwhile, the platform plans to cover all major Youyoucao production areas in both provinces by the end of 2025, which is expected to boost the income of over 20,000 herb-farming households.

As our reporter was leaving Enshi, a light rain began to fall on the Youyoucao fields in the mountains. On Old Tan's phone, the big data platform pushed a new message: "Pharmaceutical factory demand is expected to increase next week. It is recommended to harvest early." He smiled, turned, and walked into the rain to call his neighbors to prepare for work. This, perhaps, is the most authentic sense of immediacy for a mountain herb farmer in the age of data.
