In the mountainous regions of Youyang, Chongqing, at a planting base 800 meters above sea level, the Youyouca plants are entering their harvest season. Unlike previous years, the 'identity information' of each plant—from soil pH and sunlight duration to harvest time—is now uploaded to the cloud in real time. Behind this lies the official launch of a big data platform for Chinese medicinal herbs, jointly developed by Hubei and Chongqing.
'In the past, harvesting relied entirely on the experience of seasoned workers. Now, we can determine the optimal harvest period just by looking at the data curves on the screen,' said base manager Zhang Jianguo, pointing to the monitoring interface on his phone. This platform, locally dubbed the 'digital prescription,' is redefining the supply chain of Youyouca from the field to the pharmacy.
Youyouca, scientifically known as Hedyotis diffusa, is a unique Dao-di herb native to the mountainous border region of Hubei and Chongqing. It is widely used for its heat-clearing, detoxifying, and anti-tumor properties. However, for a long time, scattered cultivation and inconsistent quality have plagued the industry, with pharmaceutical companies often bargaining 'by sight' and prices fluctuating wildly. In 2024, Enshi Prefecture in Hubei Province signed a cooperation agreement with Youyang and Xiushan counties in Chongqing, jointly launching the 'Hubei-Chongqing Youyouca Big Data Traceability Project' in an attempt to use data to unblock the entire industrial chain.
At the trading center in Lichuan City, Enshi Prefecture, a large screen displays real-time updates on inventory, price indices, and logistics dynamics from 12 major production areas across Hubei and Chongqing. Trader Li Min told reporters: 'Previously, buyers had to visit dozens of villages to gather a single batch of goods. Now, through data matching, goods are shipped directly from the production areas. With fewer middlemen, the farmers' income has actually increased by 15%.' In just three months since its launch, the platform has facilitated transactions worth over 80 million yuan.
The value of the data extends beyond trading. In the laboratory of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Southwest University, researcher Wang Ting is comparing the active ingredient content of Youyouca from different production areas. 'We collected over 2,000 samples and, combined with meteorological and soil data, found that areas with an altitude of 600-900 meters and annual rainfall of 1200-1400 millimeters have significantly higher active compound levels,' she said. These findings have been translated into planting guidance manuals and pushed to over 3,000 herb farmers via the platform.
'Big data isn't just cold, hard numbers. It's a tool that lets traditional Chinese medicine "speak,"' said Liu Zhiqiang, head of the Hubei-Chongqing Chinese Medicinal Herbs Big Data Center. The center has integrated 18 types of data sources, including weather, soil, and market data, to build a full-chain digital model from seed sources to consumers. Next, they plan to introduce an AI-powered pest and disease early warning system, shifting Youyouca cultivation from 'relying on the heavens' to 'managing by the numbers.'
However, challenges remain. In Muye Township, Youyang County, 58-year-old herb farmer Lao Chen still struggles with smartphone operations. 'The platform has a voice input feature, but the elderly still prefer to call the technicians to ask questions,' he said. To address this, the local governments of both regions have jointly trained 120 'digital agritechnicians' who visit villages to help farmers upload data. Additionally, the platform has developed a dialect-friendly interface to lower the barrier to entry.
The story of Youyouca is just one example of the Hubei-Chongqing collaboration in exploring 'big data + Dao-di herbs.' From data collection to trade matching, from scientific research to cultivation guidance, a digital ecosystem covering the entire industrial chain is taking shape. As a local herb farmer put it: 'Growing herbs used to be a craft. Now, it's a science.' And big data is becoming the most crucial 'catalyst' for this science.
